3 to 9 June

Was a bit unwell this week, nothing major just largely fatigued and a bit spaced out. I think it’s down to hayfever. I finished The Wager, and it took me down a rabbit-hole of nautical terms and how they’ve impacted the language we use today. ‘Under the weather’ was apparently coined when sailors would become unwell on deck due to stormy seasickness and they would go ‘under the weather bow’ (an area below deck that is turned towards the wind).

Other phrases made a lot of sense (loose cannon, push the boat out, give a wide berth) but some were surprising (cut of one’s jib, clean bill of health, Dutch courage).

What went well

I’ve been working on the user survey report for the NETWORK short film fund. A lot of common themes coming about, which is both interesting and good!

I did two note-taking sessions for Olivia’s user research on BFI Southbank audiences. I love user interviews! They’re invaluable, as is Olivia.

Had a good chat with Anna about our design process document. Going to be working on that in the coming weeks.

Set up a coffee for myself and DCMS Digital content designer next week at BFI Southbank cafe. Very much looking forward to meeting her in person, and introducing her to the rocky road.

Got my bike!

My new Cannondale Quick 6 hybrid bike. Cycled it from London Bridge to Greenwich on Saturday and she rides beautifully.

What could have gone better

My A key is a bit funny sometimes, and decides to stop working randomly. It stopped working during one of the user research sessions last week so I had to go through all my notes after copy and pasting an A so that Olivia didn’t have to read: wnts to see m glori t the cinem but cnt book esily on website.

Watching, reading and listening (and cooking)

🛋️ At home

First Omen (2024) - How did this and Immaculate (2024) get made at the same time? ⭐⭐⭐

Disturbia (2007) - Rewatched this because my girlfriend hadn’t seen it. Incredibly dated and misogynistic in so many ways I felt embarrassed that I’d recommended it ⭐⭐

Under Paris (2024) - Love shark films, hated this ⭐

Lumberjack the Monster (2023) - This was an intriguing film, but tailed off a bit at the end ⭐⭐⭐

Hitman (2024) - Kept my attention until about 3/4 in, then it sort of just flapped about not really knowing what to do with itself ⭐⭐⭐
